Mermaiding is a fun hobby but don’t be fooled by the grace you see on social media, it can be extremely dangerous. Let’s break this down and talk about how to safely be a mermaid.
1. DO NOT buy cheap, unsafe mermaid tails.

Tails and mono-fins are sold many places and unfortunately most of them are very dangerous to swim in! They can shatter causing injury to your feet and legs which could cause permanent nerve damage, some don’t have a proper mono-fin making it very difficult to get out of them in an emergency and some fill with water which puts you at great risk of drowning. Please, never try to make your own monofin! Buy professional, safe mono-fins and always use them correctly.
First let’s talk about where NOT to get a mermaid tail/mono-fin.
Amazon (unless it‘s in my safe list)
Wish
AliExpress
Ecrater
Shein
Bonanza
Any tail without a proper mono-fin!
Not only are these tails and mono-fins unsafe but they usually contain stolen art from reputable brands. Which can also trick people into thinking they are getting a safe tail when they are not! Make sure you do your research and only shop from reputable brands.
Okay now where should you buy a mermaid tail/mono-fin?
Here’s some of my recommendations:
FinFun (can be found on Amazon)
Mertailor
Finfolk
Linden
Finis
Haleymermaid.com
Planet Mermaid
I highly recommend FinFun tails for beginners. They are affordable and come in many colors and sizes. Their mono-fins are made to be able to quickly get out of them in case of an emergency. They are light weight and easy to clean.

2. Be a strong, confident swimmer
If you plan on mermaiding as a hobby or as a job, it’s always safest if you take swimming lessons and are a strong, confident swimmer. People do drown in tails and mono-fins because they do not know how to properly swim in them. Especially children! Never put a child in a tail and leave them unsupervised in a pool!
Before using a mermaid tail practice doing dolphin kicks in a pool. This will help you get the right movement down in order to be able to swim in a tail safely. Here’s a video by FinFun on how to do a dolphin kick:
When trying a tail or mono-fin for the first time, stay at a level where you can touch the ground. That way if anything does go wrong you can stand up and avoid potentially drowning. It’s important to remember that when you first start swimming in a tail you‘re using muscles that you probably don’t normally use while swimming, which puts you at a high risk of muscle spasms, pulled muscles and exhaustion.
3. NEVER swim alone
This is a HUGE one and it’s so important. Even professional mermaids never swim alone. It’s not worth risking your life. Many things can go wrong even to the best of swimmers and professional mermaids. Like we talked about in the last paragraph, pulled muscles and exhaustion can happen to anyone! Make sure you’re accompanied by an adult who is a strong swimmer or someone who can quickly call for help.
I’ve seen too many videos of people who leave their kids to swim alone in a mermaid tail and they go under and can’t get back up. Kids should ALWAYS be supervised by an adult.
Hope this helps you navigate safely into the mermaid world. Safe swimming! 😙🫧
